The airport code for Rio de Janeiro is GIG (Galeão International Airport). It is named after Brazilian flight pioneer Alberto Santos Dumont, who was known for his contributions to the development of aviation. The airport is located about 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of downtown Rio and is the largest airport in Rio de Janeiro. In addition to GIG, there is also a domestic airport in Rio de Janeiro, known as SDU (Santos Dumont Airport), which is located much closer to downtown.
